I’d planned to hang out with Lyra. We were going to take a canoe and head to one of the islands to explore. I’d dressed in my bathing suit with shorts and a tank and water shoes, with my bag to fill with snacks and drinks. One of the things I loved about my bag was that it never got heavy. If I could fit something through the opening, it was inside and became light as a feather.

Also, when I was too lazy to have my laundry done, I could shove it in my bag, and it came out clean. If that wasn’t enough – too lazy to buy more shampoo or toothpaste? No worries. Just place the empty bottles in the bag and they came out full. It was no wonder immortals had an endless supply of money. They never needed to spend any with some well-placed charms and spells.

I opened my door to head for the kitchen but there was someone waiting for me. Atti.

I hated how my heart clenched when I saw him and those stupid beautiful silvery gray eyes. “I don’t have time for this,” I said, shutting my door behind me and trying to hurry away. “I have plans I don’t want to be late for.”

“I’m never going to stop loving you,” he said, taking up stride next to me.

“You’re trying to make Delete angry, aren’t you?”

Since I refused to look at him, I felt his wincing more than I saw it. “No.” His voice was so quiet I almost missed it. “I can’t just let you go like that, Lena.”

“You had no problem doing it in January.”

“That’s not what happened.”

“It is what happened.” I shoved the kitchen door open and started raiding the cabinets and baskets and bags. There were always well-stocked containers with pre-made picnics and bag lunches ready to go. I picked and chose which items I wanted and tossed them into my bag as I continued to ignore Atti.

“I can see why you view it that way. I’m sorry. I will apologize every day if that’s what you need.”

“I need you to go away and let me be. I told you. I have plans and you’re trying to make me late.”

Opening the massive fridge, I started pulling out waters and juices and setting them aside. I raided the fruits and veggies next. Only the two of us were going, but I didn’t know how long we were going to be gone and I also needed something to keep me busy so I wouldn’t have to concentrate on Atti and the way I filled with such hurt when he was around.

When I shut the door, he was standing there. Before I could back away, he took my hand and pulled me close, so his face was in mine. Tears stung my eyes. I didn’t want to be this close.

“You hurt me,” I said quietly. “And I’m not ready to forgive you.”

The pain and regret in his expression almost had me undone. I was startled into jumping when someone else touched me.
